Laboratory Work
Preliminary set-up of ribs
Date: Tuesday 29th October We decided to attempt a 'dry' construction (i.e. without mortar) of the ribs and arch as practice for the actual construction in November. This was useful as it made us realise quite how unstable the ribs are during construction, even when using formwork to hold them in line. After several abortive attempts we managed to get all four diagonal ribs, along with the main nave arch, to stand up together (with a bit of help from copious quantities of blu-tac!). Initial workshop set-up Date: Tuesday 22nd October We marked out the dimensions of the vault model on the floor of the Research Workshop at Minto House and began to set out the voussoir units of the transverse arch and ribs. This allowed us to get a feel for the scale of the model and see if there were any parts of the model that were missing, as these would need to be re-made. All of the voussoir units were located and were in an acceptable condition. Workshop induction at the School of Architecture Date: Friday 4th October Workshop manager Malcolm Cruickshank introduced us to the various tools and machines which we may need to use during the construction and testing of our model. We were allocated a space in the Research Workshop in the School of Architecture laboratory where we will construct the model. |
